The History of Metzger Wickersham Law Firm

Robert Vaughn You’ve probably seen our commercials on TV. You may recognize us by our tagline, “Tell Them You Mean Business,” our spokesperson Robert Vaughn, or our phone number 1-800-WIN-WIN-1. You may have even seen one of our branded Metzger Wickersham vehicles driving around town. However, you probably do not realize that Metzger Wickersham is one of Central Pennsylvania’s oldest law firms.

Metzger Wickersham proudly traces its origin back to 1888 when Frank B. Wickersham, a Steelton PA native and former school teacher, began the general practice of law. In 1909, Maurice R. Metzger, a native of Londonderry Township and also a former school teacher, joined Mr. Wickersham in the practice of law. In 1913, Mr. Wickersham and Mr. Metzger formed the partnership of Wickersham & Metzger.

In 1920, Frank B. Wickersham left the practice of law to become a Dauphin County Judge. At that time Judge Wickersham’s son, F. Brewster Wickersham, joined the partnership, and the name was changed to Metzger & Wickersham. During his career, F. Brewster Wickersham served as President of the Dauphin County Bar Association (Frank B. Wickersham and Maurice R. Metzger also both served as President of the DCBA during their careers) and as President of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (1959).

In 1945, Edward E. Knauss, III joined the firm and in 1955 the firm name was changed to Metzger, Wickersham & Knauss. (Mr. Knauss’ son, Edward E. Knauss, IV is one of Metzger Wickersham’s current attorneys). In 1957, Christian S. Erb, Jr. joined the firm and in 1967 the firm name was changed to Metzger, Wickersham, Knauss & Erb. Presently, our firm name remains the same as it was in 1967, although our firm is best known simply as Metzger Wickersham.

Over the years Metzger Wickersham has attended to a broad spectrum of legal matters, representing individuals, families, estates, partnerships, corporations, governmental entities and insurance carriers. Today, the firm concentrates its practice in personal injury law, representing injured plaintiffs in civil litigation, including car and truck accidents, workers’ compensation and social security disability claims. We currently have offices in Harrisburg (our main office), Lancaster, York, Shippensburg, Pottsville and Wilkes-Barre.

A lot has changed in the years since Metzger Wickersham was founded, but one thing hasn’t: the firm’s unwavering dedication to the practice of law.
